Oroville, Ca.
A
Bit Of History
As
you venture into the Historic town of Oroville, you
will notice the plush foothills and beautifully landscaped
valleys. In 2003 Oroville celebrated the 35th Anniversary
of the building of the Oroville Dam, which created15,500
surface-acre Lake Oroville giving us water, electricity,
flood control and an abundance of recreation.
Gabriel
Moraga was the first known visitor to this area in
1808. As he ventured through the green valley and
groves of oak trees he found an abundance of wild
game, shy native Indians, and an un-named tree lined
river which was later named in 1820 by Captain Luis
Arguello as the "Rio de las Plumas," the
River of Feathers.
In 1848 John Bidwell discovered gold on the Feather
River. When the word got out 1,000's flocked to this
area to seek their fortune. In 1856 this quaint little
town which was originally known as Ophir City, became
a tent town almost overnight. With the new found popularity
the town was given a new name of Oroville, Spanish
for "City of Gold."
